Chapter Twenty-Five

“Are you sure they’re watching the motel?” Will asked.

“Yes,” Nadine said. “They keep looking this way, and I’ve got a feeling this car followed me earlier. It pulled over there not long after I came in and… I can’t be certain, from this distance…”

“What is it?”

“It looks like it could be Leo Vasquez.”

“Stay inside,” Will instructed. “We’re only ten minutes away.”

The ten minutes seemed longer, with Will hovering just over the speed limit, forcibly restraining himself from speeding, his hands clenching the steering wheel.

I attempted to ease his anxiety. “She’s not in any danger from Vasquez, Will,” I said.

“We don’t know that. One minute he’s trying to sue the FBI through the Supreme Court, and then he launches a civil case against Brett. What the hell’s he doing outside that motel? How would he even know Nadine is Brett’s sister, or where she’s staying?”

We pulled over behind the vehicle, which was a Toyota Landcruiser, and approaching its front, we saw immediately that it was, in fact, Leo Vasquez. Will tapped firmly on the driver’s window and Vasquez, startled to see us standing there, lowered the window. Looking into the car, I noticed some hi-tech equipment and a laptop on the passenger seat.

“Mr. Vasquez, you need to get out of the vehicle where I can see you,” Will ordered.

“Why? There’s no law against sitting in a parked car.”

“Out of the vehicle, now.”

Reluctantly, Vasquez stepped slowly out of the Landcruiser, making no attempt to mask the sneer on his face. “Once again, federal agents harassing an innocent, grieving member of the public.”

Will’s eyes scanned Vasquez’s body for signs of a weapon. “Why are you watching the motel room where Brett Rochester’s sister is staying?”

“I was thinking maybe of having a word with her, if and when she came out of the room.”

“If that was the case you could have gone over and knocked on the door.”

“I didn’t want to disturb her.”

“That’s not the reason,” Will countered. “Why do you want to speak with her?”

Vasquez shrugged. “Just thought… maybe she could persuade her brother to do the right thing, fess up that he acted irresponsibly, putting the public at risk, killing Olivia.”

“What’s the reason for the computer equipment in the car?” I asked him.

He shot me a hard look. “I’m in accountancy and I get a lot of urgent calls when I’m out of the office, so I sometimes pull over to attend to a request remotely. Also not a crime.”

“How did you know Nadine is Brett Rochester’s sister?” Will asked him.

Vasquez glared back at both Will and me. “I don’t have to answer your questions.”

“Did you keep a watch on the FBI building for when Agent Rochester arrived and left?”

Vasquez clenched his teeth, anger simmering. He didn’t respond.

“Did you follow Agent Rochester, see him meet up with his sister, and then follow her, see where she lived, figure out she was Rochester’s sister from social media posts?”

“I’m not a stalker.”

“You’ve stalked Brett Rochester and now his sister. Just as you did when I was with Brett on that parking station roof.
